Restriction on use of free weights by under 16s
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to safeguard the health and safety of gym members by regulating access to free weight equipment and minimising the risk of injury to minors.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all members, guests, employees, contractors, and visitors using the gym facilities.
3. Definitions
Free Weights: Non-fixed resistance training equipment, including but not limited to dumbbells, barbells, weight plates, and kettlebells.
Minor: Any individual under the age of sixteen (16) years.
4. Policy Statement
Individuals under the age of sixteen (16) years are strictly prohibited from using free weight equipment within the facility.
This restriction is based on recognised safety considerations, including physical development factors, the technical demands of free weight exercises, and the increased risk of injury without appropriate experience and supervision.
5. Permitted Use of Facilities by Minors
Minors may access the following areas and equipment, subject to staff approval and adherence to facility rules:
- Pin-loaded resistance machines
- Hip Adductor/Abductor
- Chest Press-Incline Press- Shoulder Press
- Leg Press
- Leg curl- Leg Extension
- Chip- Dip
- Rear Delt- Pec Fly
- Cardiovascular equipment approved for junior use
- Structured programmes or classes specifically designed for minors
All permitted activities must be conducted in accordance with posted guidelines and staff instructions.
6. Supervision and Staff Authority
Minors must comply with all supervision requirements established by the facility.
Authorised staff retain the right to deny or revoke access to any equipment where safety concerns are identified.
Staff decisions made in the interest of safety are final.
7. Compliance and Enforcement
Compliance with this policy will be actively monitored by gym staff.
Any minor found using free weight equipment will be instructed to cease use immediately.
Repeated or serious breaches of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or termination of membership, in accordance with facility procedures.
8. Communication and Signage
This policy will be communicated to members at the point of registration and through clearly visible signage in free weight areas indicating that use is restricted to individuals aged sixteen (16) and over.
9. Review and Amendment
This policy will be reviewed periodically and updated as necessary to ensure ongoing compliance with health and safety standards, industry best practice, Insurance and applicable legislation.
